Newsletter 05/2022: “U.N. Black Sea Grain Initiative”

On 22 July 2022 Russia and Ukraine signed a landmark deal to reopen Ukrainian Black Sea ports for grain exports, increasing hopes that an international food crisis aggravated by the military crisis can be eased. According to U.N. sources the deal is expected to be fully operational in a few weeks and would restore grain shipments from the three reopened ports to pre-war levels of 5 million tonnes a month.
